It’s that time again, time for the Steelers report card based on Sunday night’s performance against the San Diego Chargers. And I must say, I think they have improved in areas. There are some places that still have me puzzled because I know they could play better, but overall a much better outing.

Offense: A
The offensive line contributed strongly to the Steelers win against the Chargers. They were able to give Roethlisberger time to throw for 333 yards, and to six different receivers. They were able to open up gaps for Rashard Mendenhall to have a great game, rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns. The offense won this game for the Steelers in spite of the defense, and that is not something that is often said.

Defense: C
Holding the Chargers scoreless in the first half was a feat. Letting them almost come back in the 4th quarter is a recipe for defeat. I don’t know why the defense is quitting after three quarters of play, but someone needs to remind them that the playing time of a football game lasts 60 minutes. I guess that was Polamalu’s job and I’m looking forward to his return.

Special Teams: B+
Nothing too special, however Jeff Reed was back to form, making a 46 yard field goal to put the game out of reach for the Chargers.

Coaching: B
Tomlin’s decision to sit Mendenhall last week seemed to have worked. Hopefully it will also work for Limus Sweed who sat out this game. Too bad he can’t sit the defense.

Overall: B
With the offense and defense running on all cylinders, the Steelers will be hard to beat. The defense needs to start pulling their weight to avoid more 4th quarter comebacks by their opponents.
