It’s a typical weekday, around 1PM, and you can hear the tune of General Hospital’s opening music coming from the other room. For us football fans, we do not want any part of soap operas, that’s why they created football. But as every week unravels, we continually hear NFL stars complaining about their team, coaches, or even their fans. This is how I began to think to myself, “When did the NFL become a soap opera?”.
I’m not saying that the entire NFL is turning into one big soap opera, but there is certainly a dozen or so players who could easily star in a soap opera, leading us to the “Ten Players Who Could Star In A Soap Opera” list. (There is not specific order for the players, as I do not rank soap opera stars)
Tony Romo
Reason: The perfect candidate to take over any soap opera, Romo has provided headlines his entire career that are involving his off the field news.
Possible Storyline: Romo has been dating his longtime girlfried Jessica Simpson, but as he continues to have his face posted in every magazine and news station, Romo starts to falter under the extreme pressure that has been pushed his way. With an inconsistent NFL career underway, Romo searches elsewhere, and begins to fall for the lovely Carrie Underwood.
The Suspense: How Will Romo’s NFL career pan out? Who Will Tony end up choosing: Jessica or Carrie? and When Will Romo finally win a playoff game?
Chad Ochocinco
Reason: 85 is always in search of the limelight, and his on the field antics are designed to give him more face time, rather then letting his play do the talking.
Possible Storyline: Chad realizes that he is starting to lose the attention of NFL fans, and acting quickly, he decides to change his last name from Johnson to Ochocinco. With NFL fans back on the 85 bandwagon, Ochocinco continues to bring more fans on board after he falls in love with the Twitter sensation. With over 209,000 followers, 85 has once again made a name for himself, and appears to have revitalized his NFL career…for now.
The Suspense: When will Chad focus on the game, instead off Twitter? What will his next celebration be? and How long will he and Carson Palmer’s on-the-field relationship last?
Tom Brady
Reason: Tom Brady has it all. He’s one of the top Quarterbacks today, he’s married to a model, and he’s got more Super Bowl rings then the Manning family.
Possible Storyline: After winning three Super Bowls, Brady appears to be on his way to Canton. But after a low hit to his knee, Brady’s season is over. His offseason is dedicated to strictly rehabbing his banged up knee in hope of getting back to his previous form. As the upcoming season nears, Brady demands to play in all four the Pats’ preseason game, something that he has never done before. With his wishes granted, Brady enters the new season with a new sense of arrogance, but with a couple of weak performances, Brady’s future is in doubt.
The Suspense: Will Brady ever return to his former self? How will his knee hold up for an entire 16 game NFL season? and Will Brady be overtaken by younger QB’s, such as Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco?
Mike Vick
Reason: His past troubles are behind him, and now the question is if he can get back into football shape in Philadelphia.
Possible Storyline: After two years spent in jail on dogfighting charges, Vick has aspirations of rejoining the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell allows Vick to enter the NFL, but assigns Tony Dungy to advise Vick through the process. As time passes by and Vick remains unsigned, all hope is beginning to diminish. In an unexpected move, the Philadelphia Eagles take a risk on Vick, and bring him into the city of “Brotherly Love”. Listed behind Donovan McNabb, Vick remains hopeful of someday starting on Sundays, but with his athleticism, Philly utilizes him in their unique style of the Wildcat.
The Suspense: How will Vick behave as a backup to Donovan McNabb? Can Vick really last in the NFL after what he has been through? and Will the dogs of Philadelphia welcome Vick to town?
Brett Favre
Reason: The man can not make his mind up, and he has given NFL reporters headaches over the past three seasons with his decision making.
Possible Storyline: Favre finally decides to hang up as a Green Bay Packer. He heads down to Hattiesburg, Mississippi wearing his famous Wrangler jeans, but living a boring post NFL life, Favre changes his mind, and signs with the New York Jets. His stint with the Jets lasts just one season, where Favre once again announces his retirement. But he realizes that he lives a boring life on his farm and decides to rejoin the NFL…again. He arrives in Minnesota, where he is welcomed and hated among their rival and former team, the Green Bay Packers.
The Suspense: Will Brett Favre find success after coming out of retirement and joining the Vikings? How will Favre perform against his former team? and When will Favre hang it up…officially?
I hope you all enjoyed this article, and feel free to leave any other possible players who could fit the role of a soap opera.

hahahahah i loved this article.
What’s that blue stuff on Jessica Simpson’s face? She must have had fun with Papa Smurf last night…
What about Shawne Merriman, Michael Crabtree, and Braylon Edwards?
Don’t worry, seeing how much success this has had, I am planning on doing a Part II, so feel free to reply with possible ideas and you will shortly see another article up, probably next week.
The blue stuff on Jessica had me shivering. Can someone explain that?! Anyway, great article, Kyle.
I can explain it....Tony Romo needs to get checked!
