It’s getting close to Halloween and in the spirit of the season, I thought I’d give my “10 Scariest Steelers” list. The Steelers have always been known for having a tough defense and through the years they have had some scary good players. So here is my list:

10. Casey Hampton(2001-present) - Hampton’s style of play can only be described as relentless. He never gives up and is very disruptive to offenses. These characteristics are a big reason why he played in all 48 games through his first three seasons, winning a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2003.

9. Lamar Woodley(2008-present) - Woodley is one of the best pass rushers in the league, registering 11.5 sacks last year and is shaping up to have a better season in 2009. Quarterbacks find him extremely scary.

8. Mel Blount(1970-1983) - Blount’s speed and size made him great at harassing and overpowering receivers. His rough style of play made him a master at the “bump and run” defense.

7. Rod Woodson(1987-1996) - Woodson was elected to 11 Pro Bowls, which is the most for a defensive back. He is one of the NFL’s all time leaders in games played as a defensive back and interceptions.

6. LC Greenwood(1969-1981) - “Hollywood Bags” in his gold shoes was one of the feared members of the “Steel Curtain” in the 70’s. He recorded (unofficially) 73.5 sacks in his career with the Steelers along with 14 fumble recoveries.

5. James Harrison(2002-2003, 2004-present) - Harrison is the stuff of offensive lineman’s nightmares. Probably the best outside linebacker in the NFL. His strength makes him almost impossible to stop as he heads for the backfield.

4. Joey Porter(1999-2006) - Porter had 60 sacks as a Steeler, putting him high on the overall list. During his time with the team, he was an integral part of the Steelers’ defense. Porter’s trash-talking was one of the subplots leading up to the 2006 Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks.

3. Jack Lambert(1974-1984) - Lambert has been called the greatest middle linebacker of all times. He was known for his intensity, hard hitting and intimidation of offenses. Missing his four front teeth since high school, Lambert didn’t wear his dentures during games to add to the intimidation factor.

2. Troy Polamalu(2003-present) - He is a different scary than Mean Joe. Polamalu is scary because he could be anywhere at any time. He might be sacking the QB or intercepting a pass, the offense never knows.

1. Joe Greene(1968-1981) - He struck fear in the hearts of offenses in his time with the Steelers. Mean Joe Greene was known to get very angry out on the field. Once in 1975, during a game against the Cleveland Browns he repeatedly kicked Bob McKay in the groin, even though McKay was down on the ground.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know who you would pick.
