On the same day that Ellis Hobbs was placed on the season-ending Injured Reserve, another of the Eagles’ Cornerbacks was unexpectedly removed from the active roster. Solid reserve and special teams contributor Joselio Hanson (pictured) was slammed with a 4-game suspension by the NFL today for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Apparently, the 5th-year defender consumed a diuretic content coined illegal by football officials, but Hanson and his agent insist the absorption of the drug was not intended to improve or alter his play on the field in any way, shape, or form. The incident of this substance consumption by the Eagle CB was confirmed to occur in last season’s postseason, and the case was merely brought about today because it was only recently proven against NFL rules.
David Cornwell, Hanson’s attorney said that the veteran felt bloated after eating Chinese food before last season’s NFC Championship game and took a pill that turned out to be a diuretic, for which he later tested positive. Cornwell also said this regarding the situation: “We are disappointed. Joselio accepts his responsibilities as an NFL player…nonetheless, we suspect that he is a casualty of the looming labor war in the NFL.”
So, again, the respected, quiet, and seemingly innocent player will be removed from the team’s active roster for the next 4 weeks, and will also not receive any part of his due salary. It is disappointing that Hanson’s quality services as a reserve will be removed for a chunk of the season, especially with the recent loss of the injured Hobbs and the little depth behind the two starters–Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown.
The team did make a transaction to further solidify the recently depleted Cornerback spot, though, as they promoted Jack Ikegwuonu from the practice squad. Ikegwuonu, often called “Iguana” by Samuel, is in his second NFL season after being selected by the team in the 4th-round of the 2008 Draft. He fought hard for a roster spot in the offseason, but was ultimately defeated for a reserve position by Dimitri Patterson. It will be interesting to see how the young defender with a load of potential but quite a bit of risk will perform when placed on the field for the first time this season.
