While the Eagles have 6 players secured with Pro-Bowl appearances (who were announced Tuesday evening in a league-wide announcement), it was revealed today that there are 6 others who find themselves in the category of Pro-Bowl alternates. Basically, this doesn’t mean you are a backup in the game or are guaranteed the honor of earning a Pro-Bowl, but it provides you with a chance to attend if the original players from the all-star roster is unable to participate, whether be from injury, suspension, or–in this new case for this year’s Pro-Bowl–a member of a team set to play in the Super Bowl a week after.

While it’s not likely that an alternate selection will eventually be able to get official credit for being in the game, there’s always a chance they will make it, especially this year with the rule change regarding Super Bowl players. The rankings for alternates are quite simple: a first alternate will get to play if one of the original roster members cannot, a second alternate can play if two of the originals is hurt, and so on. Below is a list of the Eagles that were announced as Pro-Bowl alternates selected for this year’s game:

  • QB Donovan McNabb (first alternate)
  • TE Brent Celek (second alternate)
  • OG Todd Herremans (fourth alternate)
  • DT Brodrick Bunkley (fourth alternate)
  • CB Sheldon Brown (second alternate)
  • SS Quintin Mikell (third alternate)
