It should come as no surprise to anyone that has followed the NFL that Washington Redskins‘ head coach Jim Zorn has officially been fired this morning.

This was a move that was pretty much locked up around the midway point of the season, and you knew when new GM Bruce Allen took over for Vinny Cerrato that it was just a matter of time before it happened. While the Redskins showed improvement at times during the season, it never seemed to translate into wins. And well, that’s what it takes to keep your job in this league.

Of course, now all the speculation turns to Mike Shanahan replacing him in the nation’s capital, as that appears to be the number one target on the Redskins’ list. In my personal opinion, unless Jerry Jones decides to fire Wade Phillips if the Cowboys were to lose this weekend, I think Shanahan will probably be the next coach of Washington. I’d say that the Cowboys’ opening would probably intrigue him a little more, but his relationship with Allen may override that situation, if it were to happen.

So Redskins’ fans, rejoice! You’ve got a new coach coming soon enough, and maybe it’ll be a new start for the Skins as they try to compete in the loaded NFC East.
