Projecting talent from college football to the next level is a difficult task in many cases, but with one of the players on defense from last night’s National Championship game its like shooting fish in a barrel. Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Rolando McClain is arguably the most impressive prospect in the entire 2010 draft class if he chooses to forgo his senior season and declare himself eligible for April’s draft.
Complete in every aspect, McClain has all of the sought after physical attributes at 6’3” 255lbs., but that isn’t the most impressive thing about his game. Playing inside in the Alabama 3-4 defense, McClain was given a great deal of responsibility for getting his fellow defenders in proper alignment and audibilizing to the correct coverage schemes when necessary. Of all of the characteristics that make him a potential perennial All-Pro at the next level, his instinctual diagnosis of opposing offenses is by far his most valuable. McClain has drawn praise from his coaches at Alabama for thinking like an offensive coach and knowing what is coming on nearly each and every snap.
Just who does McClain resemble currently in the NFL? Well, it’s easy to say Ray Lewis whenever talking about the prototypical NFL linebacking prospect, but for McClain, he has a bit of the knock your head off mentality that Lewis brings combined with the raw athleticism and instincts of a Ray Lewis disciple Bart Scott. When middle linebackers come up and you are mentioned in the same breath as those two, special things appear to be on the horizon for this Alabama junior.
