Well, with the Super Bowl around the corner. We find ourselves crossing off one of the five NFL teams never to make it to the big game. Let’s take a look at the current list and see where these teams stack up.
The list consists of five teams, the New Orleans Saints*, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Houston Texans.
* The Saints are technically still on the list until the Super Bowl takes place.
New Orleans Saints
Although, this is a moot point seeing as though barring an attack from space aliens, the Saints will be off this list and forgotten to the realm of success (win or lose). The Saints came into the league in 1967 and went 3-11 their first year. The Saints were admitted into the NFL after a league meeting was held on November 1, 1966. That day also happened to be the Catholic Holiday All Saints Day, New Orleans owners felt it was appropriate to call them the Saints for the day they were born on. Up unto the 2007 season, the Saints never made it further than the NFC Wild Card game. In 2007 They went to the NFC Divisional game and now scheduled to appear in the Super Bowl.
Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars
The two of the newest additions to the NFL. It is understandable that these teams have never made it to the Super Bowl…yet. But one might say just give it time. The Jaguars entered the league in 1993 while the Texans came in 2002. With relatively short histories both teams have seen success. The Jaguars have made it to the playoffs twice in their history. The Texans, though never making it to the playoffs are coming off their best season yet, at 9-7. It would not be hard to imagine either of these teams making it to the Super Bowl in the near future.
Cleveland Browns
The second oldest team on the list, the Browns came into the league in 1946. The franchise conducted a team naming contest in 1945. The most popular submission was “Browns” in recognition of Paul Brown, already an established and popular figure in Ohio sports. The Browns have seen their share of success as well. They have won eight AFL championships and four NFL championships. The problem is that these were all prior to the Super Bowl era. Today, it is hard to imagine that the Browns could ever make it TO the big game let alone win it…and that is coming from a fan.
Detroit Lions
The oldest team on this hall of shame list. The Lions were originally the Portsmouth Spartans (Portsmouth, OH) formed in 1929, and moved to Detroit in 1934 where the name was changed at that time, to the Lions. The Lions have won four Championships, again prior to the Super Bowl era. Their last being in 1957. Since then they have been to the post season only nine times and winning only one of those games in those trips. They now own the second longest drought without an NFL championship (1957-present) behind Arizona Cardinals (1947 as the Chicago Cardinals-Present).
These teams are almost not “in” the club until you go to the Super Bowl. Although, there are teams that have gone but never won and they may not think that it is that big a deal whether you go or not. But tell that to one of the teams never getting there. I wish for nothing more than to see my Cleveland Browns win a Super Bowl in my life time. The problem is that there is no reasoning to say that it WILL happen. In reality, it may NEVER happen… Come on Mike Holmgren, are you our savior? I’m sure each team is asking their respective “Holmgrens” the same thing…
Let’s GO TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!
