It turns out the Pro Bowl was good for something last night; breaking news. The news broke that Indianapolis Colts star pass rushing defensive end Dwight Freeney’s ankle injury is actually much more than a simple sprain. Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle and is now listed as questionable for the big game this coming Sunday. Although the Colts have become more than just pressuring the quarterback off of the edge this season, they still rely heavily on Freeney’s presence if nothing else to get his counterpart on the other side Robert Mathis one on one matchups rushing the passer.
Without the biggest beneficiaries of this news are Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints who will presumably have a lot more flexibility on offense sans Freeney’s presence on the field. The only possible knock on Brees is that he can be rattled by pressure and has trouble finding throwing lanes when under duress at his meager 6’0” stature. The Saints first loss was the perfect illustration of the impact that a good pass rush can have on Brees as the Dallas Cowboys got to the quarterback early and often forcing some uncharacteristic mistakes out of the Saints signal caller.
As the biggest game of the year approaches however, Freeney will reportedly spend time in a hyperbaric chamber using an electrical-stimulation machine on his ankle a-la Terrell Owens before the Philadelphia Eagles played the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. There is no doubt that this story will dominate the week ahead as Super Sunday approaches and rightfully so as a clean Drew Brees with throwing lanes and time to peruse the field is a dire forecast for the Colts chances this weekend.
