For the majority of readers who take in the Super Bowl for the sixty minutes between the white lines, a piece on the halftime festivities probably isn’t the most enthralling read. But with the big game now into its 44th episode, plenty of acts have come and gone throughout the years so let’s take a look back at just which of them was the most entertaining.

4. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake – in what can be presumed as the most controversial halftime show ever hands down, the entire viewing audience received an unexpected gift as Timberlake “unintentionally” exposed one of Jackson’s breasts. Call it crazy, but any halftime show featuring partial nudity MUST make the list.

3. Rolling Stones – 2006, classic rock n’ roll is always the way to go at an American staple like the Super Bowl as Mick Jagger jumped around on stage at 62 just like decades earlier on the giant tongue shaped stage. This performance is hard to dislike even with a generational gap as the Stones put on one of the cleanest sets ever as they were nearing their senior citizen discounts at a restaurant near you.

2. U2 – Just five short months after the 9/11 attacks in New York City, Bono and the guys of U2 gave an emotional performance with a montage of all of those lost during the attacks being shown on a giant video screen at midfield. One of the best musical acts of our time playing in a heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives in a galvanizing event for the entire country has to make this list.

1b. Michael Jackson – One of the best performing artists of all-time moonwalking at the Rose Bowl in 1993 marked the first time that an entire halftime show was televised live in its entirety. From there are on all networks followed suit and every show from there on out has been broadcast to the viewing public. Of course when the King of Pop has enough smoke and pyrotechnics to make the 4th of July jealous, why would you not want to watch?

1a. Prince – The one A and one B designations are totally interchangeable as both of these acts were off the charts amazing, but when one of the most innovative artists of our time brought the house down with “Purple Rain” playing his ridiculously amazing purple guitar, Prince gets the nod. Ironically enough Prince played at halftime the last time the Indianapolis Colts made the big game so perhaps his presence on this countdown is a bit of an omen.

Whether you think it’s a tired ritual or a necessity for super Sunday, the halftime show is an exercise that has only gained in popularity since the big game began nearly a half century ago. This year The Who will be rocking out to some undeniably catchy melodies that will get the stadium jumping in Miami so don’t stray too far for the chips and salsa when the game reaches its midway point.
