It wasn’t that long ago that this Seattle Seahawks franchise was the envied one in the big game rather than the envier. The fall from grace has been difficult for Seahawks fans as Matt Hasselbeck’s career appears to be grinding to a halt and Shaun Alexander’s already has done the same. Just to recap the Envy series to this point, defense dominated the first three picks while offense has been picking up steam over the last two choices. Seattle has chosen a defensive player in each of the last four drafts, so 2010 may be their time to change gears and get offensive.
With Hasselbeck’s reign under center seemingly at its crossroads, the Seahawks may look to the future at quarterback with a player like Notre Dame Fighting Irish signal caller Jimmy Clausen offering tremendous upside and definite appeal to the fan base. Clausen went through a great deal during his three years at Notre Dame in starting since his freshman season much of his experiences have been growing pains. Those trials and tribulations can be positives as he responds very well to adversity and won’t be easily discouraged with the learning curve at the next level.
The other option at this choice remains offensive minded, but in a different vein as the main issues for Seattle on offense have stemmed from inconsistent offensive line play. During the Super Bowl year, Seattle had one of the premier left sides in all of football with Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson each in the prime of their careers. Although Anthony Davis of Rutgers Scarlet Knights fame isn’t in the class of a Jones just yet, his raw athleticism and fluid movement offer plenty of potential. Davis has a great initial punch to take the initiative on defensive lineman and gain control of his battles on the edge.
This dilemma is pivotal on just how the draft will unfold and the Seahawks hold the fate of the remaining teams in their hand. Davis may be the smart pick here, but with Pete Carroll now in place with John Schneider as his general manager, Seattle looks to sell tickets now and ask questions later as they choose Jimmy Clausen and begin to build for the future.
