Following their first Super Bowl victory in team history, the New Orleans Saints have a ton to be ecstatic about. Of course, this wonderful feeling could not have been possible without the gutsiness of Sean Payton, or the leadership of Drew Brees. But the one member of the Saints that I think deserves the biggest pat on the back is Tracy Porter, the Saints’ second year corner out of Indiana. Sure Payton and Brees have each been the rocks of this team throughout the season, but when the season was hanging in the balance, it was Tracy Porter who stepped up to the plate and delivered the crushing blows to the opposition.
It started in the NFC Championship Game, when Porter picked off Brett Favre, as the Vikings were going in for the game-winning score. His pick could not have come at a better time, and not only did it prevent the Vikings from scoring, but it swung momentum back in the Saints’ favor. Without his timely interception, the Saints might have not even been in the Super Bowl at all.
After a play like that, Porter did not even need to do anything in the Super Bowl to have my respect. As far as I was concerned, he had done more than the Saints could have ever hoped for. So how did he follow it up? By picking off Peyton Manning and returning it 74 yards the other way, preventing the Colts from tying the game and giving the Saints the separation they needed to win the game.
If you really think about it, Tracy Porter could have ended the career of Brett Favre and tainted the legacy of Peyton Manning in back-to-back games. Not too shabby, if you ask me.
And the scariest part about it, is that Porter will only get better from these two experiences. His confidence is going to be through the roof forever.
Because of the way Porter performed in the last two games, I thought that he deserved a nickname. I came up with the “Gold and Black Knight,” because he slayed two dragons en route to the Lombardi Trophy for the Saints. Hence the sword in his hand in the picture above.
What do you think of the nickname? Is it a keeper, or do you have something better?
