Hopefully you’ve been keeping up with the Countdown to the Combine which takes a look at one prospect per day until February 24th when judgment day arrives for these aspiring NFL talents with something to prove. Each piece will give an in-depth look at what NFL scouts believe the prospect has already proven and just what stones are still unturned in their trek toward the NFL Draft. The prospects chosen may seem a bit random, but these will be some of the big name players with potential boom or bust aspects to their professional football futures.
Today’s prospect created quite a controversy during the college season with arguably the least intelligent decision in the sport over the last calendar year when he was caught driving drunk just days before the biggest game of the year. Carlos Dunlap has undeniable physical talents and has been incredibly productive during his career at Florida, but the Gators defensive end certainly has some character concerns to clean up for NFL general managers.
Interviews at the combine are going to be huge for Dunlap’s status as many scouts have questioned his commitment to the team as well as his work ethic after his off-field issues. Although many a skeptical of just how committed to the team Dunlap may be in the locker room, on the field there is no questioning his ability. His 6’6” 280lbs. frame has room to add more weight and during his time at Florida he lined up all along the defensive line. Although he offers amazing instincts when he is on top of his game, Dunlap has a tendency to become invisible at times as he loses focus and often looks disinterested.
Dunlap is the definition of a boom or bust prospect as he could be the next Julius Peppers, but he could also be the next Jamaal Anderson or Derrick Harvey lacking the necessary work ethic to succeed. The jury is still out on just what he may offer to the team that chooses him in the 2010 NFL Draft, but it would be a big surprise if he weren’t off of the board in the first half of round one.
Remember, the Countdown to the Combine is on and a new installment will be up daily from now until the NFL Scouting Combine begins on February 24th.
