With the value of a good NFL kicker increasing with every “wide right” or “wide left,” the good kickers are almost impossible to find. With that being the case, the kickers who are considered to be the top kickers in the league are going to cash in big time. That point became even clearer this morning.
Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders, who has been booming kicks with his left leg for ten seasons, just received the highest kicking contract in NFL history. The deal is a 4-year contract for $16 million, with $9 million guaranteed.

Because Janikowski has shown the ability to remain consistent, and he has shown no decline in his kicking power, the Raiders realized that locking him up could be huge for their future success. If you look at this past postseason, the most consistent kicker, Garrett Hartley, was as close to an MVP as there could have been for his team. On the other hand, the kickers who did not come through in the postseason, like Shaun Suisham, were as detrimental to their teams as anybody else.

So although Al Davis and the Raiders might come out of this whole thing looking crazy, it might just be the smartest thing they could have done at this point in time. They have a commodity when it comes to a good kicker, and they are showing that they value that. In my opinion, this was a move that needed to be made.
