Hopefully you’ve been keeping up with the Countdown to the Combine which takes a look at one prospect per day until February 24th when judgment day arrives for these aspiring NFL talents with something to prove. Each piece will give an in-depth look at what NFL scouts believe the prospect has already proven and just what stones are still unturned in their trek toward the NFL Draft. The prospects chosen may seem a bit random, but these will be some of the big name players with potential boom or bust aspects to their professional football futures.

This kid is physically the biggest of the boom or bust prospects in this year’s draft and has been eating up opposing offenses since transferring to the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2008 from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College. Terrence Cody is a massive human being at 370lbs. and that is being awfully generous. The real concern with him is the potential he has to eat himself out of the league after showing up at the Senior Bowl way out of shape and raising red flags with a number of scouts.

Cody projects as a rare commodity in the NFL as a 3-4 nose tackle which are hard to come by directly out of college and often sought after by many general managers league-wide. His mammoth size and ability to occupy blockers makes him an ideal fit to free up linebackers in the second level of a defense to make plays sideline to sideline. A deciding factor to where exactly Cody falls in this year’s draft puzzle is what kind of shape he is in when he arrives at the Combine. If he can show commitment in interviews as well as at the weigh-ins by looking more like a football player he will greatly help his draft stock.

Just where will Cody go in the draft? About a month ago it was looking more and more like he would be a first round pick, but as the weeks have worn on and the scrutiny continues he is looking more like a second rounder. If Cody can maintain a steady weight at the next level and keep his stamina in a range that will allow him to stay on the field he will be a steal in round 2, but if he lets his appetite for cuisine outweigh his appetite for football, he could just as easily become an all-time flop.

Remember, the Countdown to the Combine is on and a new installment will be up daily from now until the NFL Scouting Combine begins on February 24th.
