The Countdown to the Combine has been on for over a week now and so has this series which takes a look at one prospect per day until February 27th when judgment day arrives for these aspiring NFL talents with something to prove. Each piece gives an in-depth look at what NFL scouts believe the prospect has already proven and just what stones are still unturned in their trek toward the NFL Draft. The prospects chosen may seem a bit random, but these will be some of the big name players with potential boom or bust aspects to their professional football futures.

One thing that won’t be in question with this prospect at the combine is intelligence as former Florida State safety now Oxford alumni Myron Rolle brings with him an accomplishment off the field that cannot be rivaled by anyone in this draft. Rolle took a year off from football to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon studying medical anthropology as a Rhodes scholar and hasn’t had any on-field experience since the conclusion of the 2008 calendar season with the Seminoles. Rust was a huge question mark coming into last month’s Senior Bowl for Rolle as was just what kind of physical condition would he be in after a year away from the game.

Much like in the other facets of his life, Rolle passed the tests with flying colors returning his 6’2” 215lbs. frame to the States where he impressed scouts with his instincts which showed absolutely no rust whatsoever. Rolle has gotten over one hurdle in his return to football and the Combine will be his next stepping stone to showcase just how dynamic he can be athletically.

With a solid performance in Indianapolis, it isn’t a stretch to presume that Rolle may be able to propel himself into a fight for a first round grade. His intelligence is obviously his strong suit and in the NFL at the safety position, smarts on the field is an incredibly important attribute for a successful player to possess. Although he may not overwhelm like his counterparts at the position, if Rolle can show that he is fast enough to stick with tight ends down the seam and close down running alleys on opponents he will be tough to resist near the end of round one.

Remember, the Countdown to the Combine is on and a new installment will be up daily from now until the NFL Scouting Combine begins on February 27th.
