Free agency has officially begun, and teams are scurrying all over the place trying to make moves that will better their franchise. But the team that has made the most impact on day one has clearly been the Chicago Bears. With the Bears (and the NFL) entering a season of uncertainty, head coach Lovie Smith knows that this is a make or break year for him. So far, he’s making it.
Of course, the biggest signing today for Chicago was landing Julius Peppers, who is clearly one of the best pass rushers in the entire league. While the Bears weren’t terrible defensively last year, they had to get better, and they had to find a way to get to the quarterback. They’ve found that way now, and with Peppers on the defensive line, it takes quite a bit of pressure off of the Bears’ secondary heading into next season.
The Bears also picked up former Vikings’ running back Chester Taylor, and former Chargers’ tight end Brandon Manumaleuna to help out Jay Cutler on the offensive side of things. While these aren’t blockbuster signings, the Bears need a lot of options in the new Mike Martz era, and these are two pickups that could potentially make nice impacts for this team.
All in all, a good day to be a Bears’ fan. I’d look for them to make a few more moves on the offensive side of things before the offseason is over. If they keep making nice moves like these, they’ll certainly be in the talks of being a playoff team.
