A new series was formed over a month ago called The Future 40, and the next edition is here! The segment has and will continue to run every other day until late April as we provide you with in-depth scouting reports of some 2010 NFL Draft prospects, giving you information key to understanding some of the players’ strengths, weaknesses, projected round of selection, possibility of being picked by the Eagles, and much more! And because the Draft is an important event for the entire league, some of the top-ranked players not expected to go to Philadelphia will also be reported on. This time around, we will stick to the defensive side of the ball and look at Jason Pierre-Paul:

  • Prospect Name: Jason Pierre-Paul
  • Position: Defensive End
  • College: University of South Florida
  • Height/Weight: 6’6”, 265 pounds
  • Age: 21 years
  • Class Status: Junior

Summary: There was a time in which Jason Pierre-Paul was not projected in any way to become a top prospect for the NFL Draft. In fact, this was brought up several times—even during his impressive collegiate career—because of the fact that he has played in a small amount of major collegiate games and seems to be more of an overall athlete rather than a football player. However, his achievements and explosiveness have helped him remain as one of the top-ranked Defensive Ends heading into April’s rookie selection process. Born in Deerfield Beach, Florida, Pierre-Paul began his on-field tenure in 2007 while attending College of the Canyons, a community school that has rarely drawn attention from national scouts. Despite the lack of focus on his squad, the defender racked up 14 sacks and an interception in his freshman campaign. The following year, he relocated to Kansas and performed at Fort Scott College. Similar to his stint with the Canyons school, Pierre-Paul spent only a single season with his new club, yet still achieved great statistical marks. He failed to match his previous sack total, but still compiled a respectable total of 10.5. In addition, he forced 3 fumbles and recorded 70 tackles. For his junior season in the NCAA, the DE moved to South Florida and finally gained some serious attention because of his presence on a more notable school. In 13 games with the Bulls, he notched 6.5 sacks and earned All-American honors. His stock among incoming rookies rose as he worked out for scouts and performed well in front of NFL representatives, and ultimately he would declare for the 2010 Draft, choosing to forgo his senior campaign.

  • Explodes with a tremendously quick first movement off the defensive line
  • Is able to flex his position on the d-line and balance his performance at different DE spots
  • Possesses an impressive level of athleticism for a defender on the front
  • Uses a wide range of maneuvering techniques when rushing opposing teams’QBs
  • Has great versatility and can even play back in coverage at times
  • Could play the Outside Linebacker position in the NFL

  • Utilizes his strong hands and long arms to their full extent when defending

Weaknesses:

  • Tends to make few good plays against the run
  • Seems to rely too often on finesse and maneuver moves rather than being physical at the line and in his pass rush
  • Is inexperienced at the major college level and requires a good amount of instruction
  • Can be contained with a double-team of blockers
  • Sometimes gets too high in his defensive stance from the ground
  • Lacks a consistent ability to escape an offensive lineman once they make initial contact with him
