Many believe that NFL general managers earn their paychecks based on their level of success in the later rounds of the draft by uncovering those hidden gems that can push a team over the top. With the NFL’s scouting process now winding down, many names are being brought to the forefront that weren’t exactly on the tip of anyone’s tongues when the collegiate season started. This segment called Under the Radar will continue to explore just what scouts find attractive about certain prospects that may be available beyond the glamour rounds of the draft and why you’re team may be interested in landing one of these sleepers.

Red zone specialists are starting to become a common thing in the NFL recently and E.J. Morton-Green has the potential to fit that bill for some team in the near future. Morton-Green was originally recruited to play for Miami-Ohio, but after seeing very little playing time he transferred to Division 1A Morgan State where he saw a bit more of the field. His pro day performance is what has really gotten the attention of scouts suggesting that he may have a future as a red zone target at the next level. His 6’3” 208lbs. frame ran the 40 yard dash in 4.47 seconds and posted a 37.5 inch vertical leap on top of that. He continued to impress with a 10’6” broad jump which would have tied the best mark at the NFL Scouting Combine among his wide receiver brethren. With a rare size and speed combination, Morgan-Green is a coveted breed by NFL personnel experts and could become a dynamic player at the next level.

One potential drawback for Morton-Green is the fact that he really didn’t look all that gifted athletically with some slow times in the agility drills at his workout. Scouts might question the fact of whether he is simply a one trick pony and be hesitant to use a draft pick or roster spot on a player with a limited skill set. A lack of on-field production is a big concern as his big frame and incredible leaping skills can only go so far. As evidenced by the lack on an actual photo in pads and uniform, Morton-Green is a bit of a workout warrior at this point and has to be considered a project by any team giving him a look. He is likely to be a late consideration in the 7th round by a team looking for some depth at wide receivers that could be groomed into a big time performer on Sundays.

A number of names will be called during April’s NFL Draft that seem to be from out of left field, but don’t let E.J. Morton-Green’s be one of them. Keep looking out for more Under the Radar players shooting up draft boards or quietly lurking in this incredibly deep 2010 class that could make a huge impact over the coming years on Sundays.
