Pacman’s back AGAIN and no, not the Atari dot-eating classic yellow character scurrying away from ghosts. Adam “Pacman” Jones has had a number of opportunities in the NFL and still managed to throw each and every one of them away with reckless behavior and a track record of criminal behavior. In a league where personal conduct policies now rule the domain and the Commissioner Roger Goodell rules with an iron fist, Jones has somehow warranted yet another look and this time with the Cincinnati Bengals who never shy away from a controversial acquisition.
Jones was out on the practice field with his new teammates and coaches for the first time on Tuesday since inking his two-year agreement with the club late last week. The rap sheet is lengthy when it comes to the baggage Pacman brings with him to any new team beginning way back in his rookie season as the 6th overall selection of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. His troubles began with a holdout failing to agree to terms with the Titans who were concerned about several off-field incidents that Jones was involved in just after being drafted. Eventually Jones would get on the field and make a huge impact during his second season in the league, but his problems outside the lines eventually led to a suspension from the league office for one calendar year in 2007. The Dallas Cowboys stepped up to the plate from there and traded a fifth round pick for the troubled cornerback, but the saga only continued as Jones had an altercation with a bodyguard and wound up playing in Canada during the 2009 football season.
That brings us to present day again where Jones has been brought into the fold by a team notoriously unafraid of adding players with questionable character to its roster. For a team with two young, top notch corners like Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph already on their roster however, this type of gamble on a player of toxic character and a divisive locker room presence just doesn’t make any sense. The Bengals are that team that has a great deal of potential year after year, but somehow they always end up getting in their own way and making the journey much more difficult than it needs to be.
From a football standpoint, this move really shouldn’t have much of an impact at all for the Bengals aside from a possible special teams presence where Jones has provided some electricity in the return game during his career. Cincinnati continues to try and become the land of second chances for talented NFL players carrying off the field baggage as their Head Coach Marvin Lewis sees the good in most players rather than the negative. Last year’s reclamation project in Tank Johnson worked out rather well for the team with no incidents and steady production from the beleaguered defensive tackle. The organization can only hope that a similar scenario plays itself out with the much higher profile powder keg Adam “Pacman” Jones during the upcoming campaign.
