Okay, stop me when this sounds familiar… the Denver Broncos could be looking to make a move at quarterback… STOP! In what promises to be an interesting saga, there are rumors floating around that Denver is shopping one of the four quarterbacks currently on their roster. The team traded with the Cleveland Browns to acquire Brady Quinn back in March only to turn around and draft former Florida Gators signal caller Tim Tebow in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Needless to say, Denver’s depth chart under center is getting rather crowded with incumbent starter Kyle Orton and third stringer Tom Brandstater left wondering what is going on.

Something similar did happen last year lest we forget when the Broncos young Head Coach Josh McDaniels alienated then starting quarterback Jay Cutler with trade rumors that the team was trying to acquire Matt Cassel from McDaniels’ former team the New England Patriots. After that deal fell through however, the fallout was immense and led to a spat between Cutler and McDaniels which ultimately forced a trade to the Chicago Bears. The similarities here are few and far between, but the quarterback position is one spot where teams would like to be settled at this time of year preparing for the various camps and getting in the necessary work for the upcoming season.

McDaniels has vehemently denies any such discussions this time around with the team looking to drop a quarterback from its roster before the season begins, but something tells me that this is far from over. There is no way that the Broncos will carry four quarterbacks to their week one roster so someone is going to be moved one way or another. Orton is the presumed leader in the clubhouse when it comes to the competition for the starting gig, but he is also the most tradable commodity playing under the restricted free agent designation allowed under the final year of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

There really isn’t any clear cut team with interest in acquiring another quarterback this late in the offseason process, but the Buffalo Bills certainly come to mind as a team that could use a veteran to spur on some healthy competition. Still this may take a while to play itself out and depends largely upon just what the Broncos see from their rookie Tebow in terms of throwing the football. What we have all learned from watching the NFL soap opera unfold is to never take anything that coaches say at face value. McDaniels may not be willing to discuss the trade options for the team currently, but there is no doubt that there surplus of quarterbacks makes it much easier to facilitate a deal.
