In a sport like American football, injuries are just a part of the game. Players have played through injuries ever since the game existed, and for the average fan, it’s hard to imagine playing through some of these particular injuries. Which is why I am fairly confident that no one will ever question Dallas Cowboys‘ running back Marion Barber’s toughness again. Word came out today that Barber tore his quad all the way back in Week 2 of the season, but just kept on playing throughout the rest of the season.
I mean, think about that for a second. A running back in the National Football League playing through an injury to his leg. But not just a sprain or minor tweak. A torn quad. While I’m no doctor, I’m fairly certain that the quadricep is a pretty important part of the leg, and it’s hard to believe that Barber was still able to be as efficient as he was with this type of injury.
I know that one the surface, a torn quad injury doesn’t exactly sound like the worst injury you could get as an athlete. But again, we have to consider the circumstances here. It’s for a position that requires the legs as the main fuel for the skill, and there’s also 250+ pound beasts running at you and trying to tackle you. That’s probably never good for the healing process either. If you think about all the hits that Barber took throughout the course of the season, it’s just amazing to believe that he could play the majority of the season without any sort of setback.
Barber will once again be a crucial piece of the Cowboys’ puzzle this upcoming season, as he, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice are one of the best running back trios in the game right now. He brings the smashmouth portion of the running game for the Cowboys, while Jones and Choice bring more of the speed.
Hopefully Barber can avoid the injuries in 2010, because if the Cowboys have all three of these running backs healthy, it’s going to be extremely tough for opposing defenses to stop them.
