There’s been a lot of speculation lately about the quarterback situation for the Denver Broncos. After all, that’s what happens when you draft arguably the greatest college player we’ve ever seen in Tim Tebow, as that is sure to get fans talking. But today, head coach Josh McDaniels made it very clear that the Broncos’ starting quarterback heading into the upcoming season would be Kyle Orton.
This really isn’t surprising at all, since I don’t think many people really expected Tebow to make that big a stride in such a short amount of time. Since the consensus is that Tebow is going to be a 2-3 year project, I’m not sure that anyone with basic common sense thought that Tebow would be taking the field with the first team on opening day.
But when the Broncos acquired Brady Quinn from the Cleveland Browns, some wondered whether Quinn could potentially win the job away from Orton, but we all see that’s not the case. While I don’t consider Orton or Quinn elite quarterbacks in this league, I’d probably take Orton over Quinn in this situation. Orton has been in Denver for a year now, and has gotten use to the system that McDaniels has implemented, so he should be able to make some strides this upcoming season.
However, when the Broncos decided to trade Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler, it sort of made their passing game irrelevant. Sure, they’ve still got Eddie Royal, but I just cannot see this passing attack being anywhere close to the level that it was last year. They don’t have the same type of weapons, which means that Orton may actually take a step back this season.
So maybe Quinn and Tebow are lucky that they don’t have the job right now. While Orton has been named the starter, this Bronco offense still has a long way to go before they become a serious threat to opposing defenses.
