NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has set quite a high standard handing down brisk and strict punishments league-wide for any conduct he believes not to uphold the standards of the shield. That should lead fans to speculate that with the news of Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young’s altercation in a strip club early Sunday morning, VY’s discipline will be just as harsh as those who have messed up before him. We all know the precedent that was set with the hefty suspension for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and his run in with the law so it seems inevitable that Young too will be disciplined just as stiffly despite his high profile position.
As for the incident itself, video reportedly shows Young and the instigator Creiton Kinchen getting into a scuffle after Kinchen insulted Young before making a disparaging sign regarding the Texas Longhorns. Of course this upside down “Hook ‘em Horns” hand sign isn’t exactly a flattering gesture, but given Young’s track record as an immature and questionable leader, walking away from the situation would have been by far his best option. Unfortunately Young chose to throw a punch and Kinchen suffered a bloody lip during the altercation but did not require any medical attention.
Any incident involving Young harkens back to early in the 2008 season when Nashville police were sent on a search for VY after his family became concerned that he may try to hurt himself. He had been replaced by veteran backup quarterback Kerry Collins in the previous week’s game after being injured and booed off of the field by Titans fans. Last season Collins began the year under center, but the Titans miserable 0-6 start prompted team owner Bud Adams to suggest that Young be reinserted as the starter. Tennessee finished on fire last year after the dreadful start winning eight of their final ten games and they look to ride that momentum into the 2010 campaign.
That may be derailed by this off-field incident with Young which will lead many fans to say “here we go again” when it comes to VY’s erratic behavior. The team certainly has the makings of a contender with the emergence of their running back Chris Johnson as a top five offensive player in the league and their young, talented wideout Kenny Britt putting up a solid rookie season in 2009. It remains to be seen just how the league will deal with this incident and whether or not it will affect Young mentally. With his already presumed fragile psyche, the Titans have to be concerned moving forward about just how much their quarterback has really matured and of course how will he perform in the 2010 season.
