Football is a physical sport. It might be the most physical sport out there, with all the constant hits taking place on the field. Luckily, there are various alternatives to the game that we know and love, both on the professional and collegiate levels. One of those alternatives is flag football, which of course, only requires pulling a flag off your opponent instead of leveling them to the ground. However, it looks like we may now have to put flag football is the “physical sport” list.
Why, exactly? Because stud Carolina Panthers‘ wide receiver Steve Smith apparently broke his arm during a friendly game of flag football. Supposedly he was playing defensive back as well instead of his usual wideout role. Probably not the first injury that comes to mind when you’re taking the field for that game. Especially not at the defensive back position in a flag football game.
Now don’t get me wrong. Flag football can be a pretty physical encounter at certain levels. College intramurals are the first area that comes to mind. But it sounds like Smith was just playing an easy-going game with some friends, and just had one of those freak accidents where he slipped and fell.
I doubt that head coach John Fox was very happy about this, since it looks like he’ll be missing the beginning of training camp. And Fox definitely needs to win this year if he is to keep his job, and Smith will be a huge part of that. He’s still the most dangerous weapon on that offense, and he’ll need to have a big year for them to be successful.
Of course, for that to happen, I’d say he probably needs to stay away from the flag football games for a while.
