Hold the presses; it appears that there actually IS some money out there that NFL teams are willing to spend this offseason. After weeks of pondering whether any contracts were going to be signed at all amongst first round picks and veterans looking to be compensated according to their production, three relatively high profile deals were struck on Thursday by teams around the league. It’s that time of year again. No, not the time when pads start smashing together or play action fakes are pulled off with seamless ease, but the time when contract holdouts become more of a conversation point than the actual action on the field. Teams will be anxiously trying to ink their first round draft choices to multi-million dollar contracts with training camps looming around the league even though none of them have played a single snap in the NFL. Until a rookie wage scale is put into effect via a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) however, teams will just have to bite the bullet and hand the cash over willingly. More »

When healthy, New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Jammal Brown is among the top tier pass protectors in the league. You can now change the team attached to his name as the always willing to make big offseason splashes Washington Redskins made a deal to acquire the lineman from the Saints over the weekend. Brown and New Orleans were having a bit of a dispute over the lineman’s contract as he was tendered by the team under the final year of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) much like several other unhappy players around the league and didn’t attend voluntary workouts. Although he is coming off of a lost season due to both hip and sports hernia surgeries, Brown is a former first round pick with loads of talent that can presumably still be a force in the NFL as a bookend tackle. All NFL fans are familiar with the dreaded quarterback controversy mantra and if you have two starting quarterbacks you really have none, but does the same apply for running backs? The Buffalo Bills are faced with answering that difficult question as the team has reportedly been shopping their former first round draft pick Marshawn Lynch around the league after taking the explosive C.J. Spiller of Clemson Tigers fame in the opening round of this past April’s NFL Draft. Buffalo already has Fred Jackson in their stable of ball carriers and he shouldered the bulk of the load last season with the squad. More »

NFL teams are all too familiar with injuries and plenty of clubs will be holding their breath hoping that injured stars in 2009 return to the field in 2010 without any lingering effects. Even if there are still issues with some players, plenty of teams have taken measures to ensure that they are not without contingency plans at important positions. Whether it be the addition of a free agent signing or a trade to acquire a seasoned veteran just in case the unforeseen should happen, teams are bracing for the ‘what ifs’ of the NFL landscape. Okay, stop me when this sounds familiar… the Denver Broncos could be looking to make a move at quarterback… STOP! In what promises to be an interesting saga, there are rumors floating around that Denver is shopping one of the four quarterbacks currently on their roster. The team traded with the Cleveland Browns to acquire Brady Quinn back in March only to turn around and draft former Florida Gators signal caller Tim Tebow in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Needless to say, Denver’s depth chart under center is getting rather crowded with incumbent starter Kyle Orton and third stringer Tom Brandstater left wondering what is going on. More »

Under the final year of the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), many teams have had the luxury of retaining their young superstars at bargain prices. Any players with less than six years of service in the league were eligible to be given the restricted free agent (RFA) compensation for the upcoming season. Between RFA designations and the thirty percent rule which only allows players in 2010 to receive a thirty percent raise in their base salary from 2009 to 2010, the activity has been negligible to say the least. The cliché thrown around most often by the NFL talking heads is the fact that all thirty-two teams have an equal shot when the season begins. There have been a number of examples in recent years to support those claims with worst to first scenarios playing themselves out across the league. In 2007 the Miami Dolphins looked inept wining just one game on a fluky overtime catch en route to a 1-15 record and the number one overall draft pick. Just one year later the team went 11-5 and captured that AFC East division crown. The unthinkable can happen and does on a regular basis in the NFL, so let’s take a look at some candidates to make the miraculous turnaround in the 2010 version. More »

In a proof positive example that the NFL Draft is far from an exact science, the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys exchanged former 1st round draft picks in a deal that could have once been considered a blockbuster, but in reality was just a swap of on-field disappointments. The Boys and Rams had a swap meet of sorts filling needs for one another with Dallas receiving offensive tackle Alex Barron to fill a void left by the recently released Flozell Adams while the Rams got linebacker Bobby Carpenter in return to try and fix a woeful defense with an infinite amount of holes. The end appears to be near for Oakland Raiders former number one overall pick Jamarcus Russell as the club appears ready to sever ties with the much maligned signal caller in the near future. There are plenty of comparisons for Russell who was highly touted after leaving the LSU Tigers a year early as a junior and hurling the ball 60-plus yards from his knees in workouts. None of the strong armed, gunslinger comparisons panned out at the next level, but now many liken Russell to the former San Diego Chargers bust Ryan Leaf. More »
