Man, Cedric Benson either can’t catch a break, or just doesn’t get it. After the fourth overall draft pick (in 2005) was kicked off the Chicago Bears for a few alcohol-related incidents and injury concerns (not to mention the fact that his teammates didn’t particularly like him). He gets a second chance in Cincinnati, where he flashed the potential that made him one of the best running backs to come out of the University of Texas. He set a few Bengals records after signing a 2 year, $7 million contract after the 2008 season. You’d think that he would understand that his leash is short and tenuous, but apparently he doesn’t.
He was arrested for punching a bartender in the face (assault) and posted bail. Now, will any punishment come from the NFL or the Bengals? Who knows, though Cincinnati doesn’t want to be without their star rusher since they have little to no depth behind him. The personal conduct policy should certainly come into play, though after Vince Young’s non-suspension, maybe Benson will get a pass too. He’s saying that the Austin, TX police obtained a warrant to arrest him without hearing his side of the story, so who knows, maybe this is all a misunderstanding. More likely, however, is that Cedric Benson is another NFL player who just doesn’t get it.
Although the timing is likely just a coincidence, two great pass catchers in the NFL’s history called it a career this week in the dead of the NFL’s offseason. Both Isaac Bruce and Muhsin Muhammad announced their intentions to hang up the pads which really should come as no surprise to fans around the league. Each had decorated careers and was incredibly difficult to contain during the height of their careers, but at 37 years old, both had clearly lost a step in recent years and their respective organizations were ready to turn the page to a new chapter. Okay, stop me when this sounds familiar… the Denver Broncos could be looking to make a move at quarterback… STOP! In what promises to be an interesting saga, there are rumors floating around that Denver is shopping one of the four quarterbacks currently on their roster. The team traded with the Cleveland Browns to acquire Brady Quinn back in March only to turn around and draft former Florida Gators signal caller Tim Tebow in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Needless to say, Denver’s depth chart under center is getting rather crowded with incumbent starter Kyle Orton and third stringer Tom Brandstater left wondering what is going on. More »
Under the final year of the current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), many teams have had the luxury of retaining their young superstars at bargain prices. Any players with less than six years of service in the league were eligible to be given the restricted free agent (RFA) compensation for the upcoming season. Between RFA designations and the thirty percent rule which only allows players in 2010 to receive a thirty percent raise in their base salary from 2009 to 2010, the activity has been negligible to say the least. Just as there are always teams that surprise us in a positive manner, there are conversely some squads that disappoint on a year to year basis. The Tennessee Titans are a primary example of this after going 13-3 in 2008 and cruising into the playoffs, the Titans didn’t win their first game of the 2009 season until November 1st (week 8). After the 0-6 start, the team did steady itself and finish 8-8 on the year, but it was quite the disappointment considering the expectations from just one season prior. Sadly for one fan base, history is likely to repeat itself in 2010 and the trick is figuring out just which squad is most likely to underperform. More »
Everyone knows that NFL general managers make their paychecks by their success in the later rounds of the draft and uncovering those hidden gems that can push a team over the top. With the bulk of the scouting just getting underway and many names being brought to the forefront who weren’t exactly on the tip of anyone’s tongues when the collegiate season started, this new segment called Under the Radar will explore just what scouts find attractive about certain prospects who may be available beyond the glamour rounds of the draft. Once an All-Pro Cornerback for the Chicago Bears, Jerry Azumah was forced to put his football career to a halt following injuries to his hip and neck pain. Azumah entered the league in 1999 when he was selected as the 14th pick of the fifth round by the Chicago Bears. He dominated Division 1-AA with the University of New Hampshire, and won the Walter Payton award for best offensive player. In 2003, Azumah led the league in kickoff return yardage, and took two back to the endzone. In 2004, Azumah was selected to the Pro Bowl as a kick returner. Then came March 23, 2006, the day that Azumah retired. More »
It was announced on Wednesday that Tom Brady has been named the recipient of the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. Of course the New England Patriots signal caller suffered that horrific knee injury in the first quarter of a week 1 contest against the Kansas City Chiefs one year ago and had to undergo major reconstructive surgery to repair the ligament damage in the offseason. As if that wasn’t enough, Brady suffered through well documented complications with the injury as there was an infection in the area of the surgery that could have potentially compromised the reconstruction entirely. The new year will for some franchise’s inevitably bring in a new regime to run the show and the list of team’s likely to be searching for new head coaches this year is right up there with seasons past as the coaching carousel begins to spin. With Hall of Fame resumes lurking in the weeds like Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, John Gruden, and Brian Billick, owners will undoubtedly be infatuated with the thought of making a blockbuster hire this offseason. The ball is in your court, Eagles, as the race for that elusive second seed in the NFC playoffs heats up after the Chicago Bears handed the Minnesota Vikings their third loss in four games last night at Solider Field. With Minnesota seemingly in free fall and their offense in disarray as the schism between quarterback Brett Favre and Head Coach Brad Childress deepens, the Philadelphia Eagles have a great opportunity in front of them this weekend when they travel to Jerryworld to face the Dallas Cowboys.
