When the clock strikes midnight tonight, the NFL’s much anticipated free agency period will begin without a salary cap for the first time since a cap was implemented in 1994. This uncharted territory for the league has some a bit uneasy as to what to expect from teams this offseason. Obviously there will still be some big spenders as always from Daniel Snyder ’s big fat bankroll with the Washington Redskins to his divisional rival with the Dallas Cowboys in Jerry Jones. Perhaps the most pressing question is not which team will spend the most, but which will spend the least. More »
It turns out the Pro Bowl was good for something last night; breaking news. The news broke that Indianapolis Colts star pass rushing defensive end Dwight Freeney’s ankle injury is actually much more than a simple sprain. Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle and is now listed as questionable for the big game this coming Sunday. Although the Colts have become more than just pressuring the quarterback off of the edge this season, they still rely heavily on Freeney’s presence if nothing else to get his counterpart on the other side Robert Mathis one on one matchups rushing the passer. After Sunday’s predictable (by anyone but me) results, both number one seeds have advance to super Sunday in Miami. For the first time since 1993 when the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys dynasties ruled the NFL landscape, February 7th’s collision will feature the two teams with the best regular season records from their respective conferences in the big game. Remember that Reggie Bush guy from USC, the one who was touted as the second coming of Gale Sayers coming out of college after winning a Heisman trophy and headlining a Trojan dynasty in southern California? You know, the kid who was the consensus best player in the 2005 NFL Draft until the Houston Texans seemingly made the most colossal blunder in draft history by selecting North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams number one overall instead? If you’re not impressed with the way the Dallas Cowboys are playing football then you’re not really a fan of the game. Watching a team on a run as the Cowboys are on is beyond impressive. You feel the stars are aligned for Big D as they roll through opponents week after week. The Cowboys enter this game on Sunday doing everything well. They run the ball well, they pass it well and their defense is playing SO well they could actually be without that good offense and still win games. More »
Hypotheticals are always a buzzworthy topic in the media as far as the NFL landscape is concerned and this weekend is no exception on the coaching front. Two names on the tongues of fans in these respective cities prior to this season starting who may potentially be coaching for their job security in the postseason are Norv Turner with the San Diego Chargers and Wade Phillips with the Dallas Cowboys.
Since then, many have kind of changed their tune on both of these guys especially with the Chargers riding a high into the postseason on an eleven game winning streak and the Cowboys finishing out December strong before winning on Wild Card weekend this past Saturday. Still the questions remain on the style of these two coaches and whether or not they are NFL head coach material.
Both Phillips and Turner have somewhat of a laissez-faire approach to coaching almost letting the inmates run the asylum or whatever cliché you want to insert about their relaxed approach to the game. Many have argued that this shows a lack of leadership on the parts of these two coaches, but it could also be contended that perhaps these two see enough leaders within the locker room to galvanize their respective teams without a “rah-rah” guy wearing the headset while barking at the officials.
Whatever the outcome may be for these two squads in the postseason over the coming weeks, it seems that both Phillips and Turner have proven themselves to be very solid coaches in the league and should retain their jobs for 2010.

One matchup that won’t get a lot of hype Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys take on the Minnesota Vikings comes at the tight end position. Both teams feature elite tight ends that have played a pivotal role in their offenses, respectively.
Witten, who led the Cowboys this season with 94 receptions, earned a spot on the NFC Pro Bowl team. Shiancoe, who led the Vikings with 11 touchdown receptions, did not. The humble Shiancoe won’t admit it, but this is his crack at earning due respect.
