Remember back to Brian Cushing’s positive test for a banned substance on the NFL’s list of masking agents? Well the Houston Texans Rookie of the Year award recipient now has a new rebuttal for his positive test; overtraining. No, seriously. He claims that his overexertion caused the test to pop up positive for a fertility drug commonly used to mask the effects of performance enhancing drugs in the NFL’s testing regimen. More »
It’s that time of year again. No, not the time when pads start smashing together or play action fakes are pulled off with seamless ease, but the time when contract holdouts become more of a conversation point than the actual action on the field. Teams will be anxiously trying to ink their first round draft choices to multi-million dollar contracts with training camps looming around the league even though none of them have played a single snap in the NFL. Until a rookie wage scale is put into effect via a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) however, teams will just have to bite the bullet and hand the cash over willingly. More »
Most folks dream of taking vacations in February to escape the cold and go to warm destinations like Florida or Arizona. Planning the most globally attractive championship game in the world at a venue that doesn’t fulfill those characteristics seems like a questionable decision, but the NFL seems poised to make that choice. At an owner’s meeting on Tuesday in Dallas, the dollars and cents (certainly not sense) behind the NFL scenes will assemble and discuss the possibility of having a Super Bowl in the New York metropolitan area at the new Meadowlands currently under construction. With a number of offseason image problems plaguing the NFL from the Ben Roethlisberger scandal to the collective bargaining agreement being in limbo, the last thing that the league wanted was one its young up-and-coming stars to test positive for a banned substance. Unfortunately that is exactly what happened when Houston Texans linebacker and 2009 Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing was officially suspended for the first four games in the 2010 season after testing positive for a non-steroidal banned substance. It was revealed that Cushing appealed the failed test in February, but the NFL found that the test was legit and went ahead with the announcement to suspend Cushing. More »
The Countdown to the Combine has been on for over a week now and so has this series which takes a look at one prospect per day until February 24th when judgment day arrives for these aspiring NFL talents with something to prove. Each piece gives an in-depth look at what NFL scouts believe the prospect has already proven and just what stones are still unturned in their trek toward the 2010 NFL Draft. The prospects chosen may seem a bit random, but these will be some of the big name players with potential boom or bust aspects to their professional football futures. More »
The Saints certainly came marching in to begin the second half with arguably the gutsiest call in Super Bowl history going for an onside kick and successfully recovering. That being said, the game itself was actually rather tight and quite cerebral in nature which really begs that question of whether or not last night’s Super Bowl came down to coaching. More »
For the majority of readers who take in the Super Bowl for the sixty minutes between the white lines, a piece on the halftime festivities probably isn’t the most enthralling read. But with the big game now into its 44th episode, plenty of acts have come and gone throughout the years so let’s take a look back at just which of them was the most entertaining. More »
Unlike franchise quarterbacks such as Joe Montana and more recently Brett Favre, it would be difficult to picture Indianapolis Colts elite signal caller Peyton Manning ever putting on a different colored jersey. According to many sources around the Super Bowl, the potential of that ever taking place is to be put out of the realm of possibility after the season concludes as the two sides will sit down and negotiate an extension for Manning’s contract. The week leading up to the Super Bowl is a lot like the week leading up to Christmas (for you Christians out there like me). It is the culmination of 11 months of thinking about football. Beginning in March at the Scouting Combine through the draft and Free Agency, and let’s not forget the grueling Training Camp and finally (FINALLY) the season starts. It all leads up to the Super Bowl. I can finally say after years of being disappointed that I don’t care who wins. Let’s look back to the Super Bowls since the Eagles have become relevant to the “Who will win the Super Bowl” discussion: 2000. More »
It turns out the Pro Bowl was good for something last night; breaking news. The news broke that Indianapolis Colts star pass rushing defensive end Dwight Freeney’s ankle injury is actually much more than a simple sprain. Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle and is now listed as questionable for the big game this coming Sunday. Although the Colts have become more than just pressuring the quarterback off of the edge this season, they still rely heavily on Freeney’s presence if nothing else to get his counterpart on the other side Robert Mathis one on one matchups rushing the passer.
